The meaning of the name Malachi can be seen as messenger, or oracle. Malachi came to speak in behalf of the Lord, and to prepare our hearts to receive the Lord and to walk under His Lordship. There is a rich beauty in his prophecy, a Living Word for us to embrace today.
1 “Behold, I am going to send My messenger, and he will clear the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple; and the messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight, behold, He is coming,” says the LORD of hosts.
2 “But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap.
3 “He will sit as a smelter and purifier of silver, and He will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, so that they may present to the LORD offerings in righteousness.
The messenger can be seen as the Word, the Law and the Prophets, the messenger is constantly at work, seeking those with ears to hear what The Spirit is expressing. This is pointing the Lord Jesus Christ, and the establishment of His divine order, His Lordship, and from this His people, His ambassadors, or envoys that reflect and carry His Name, and Nature.
4 “Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the LORD as in the days of old and as in former years.
5 “Then I will draw near to you for judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers and against the adulterers and against those who swear falsely, and against those who oppress the wage earner in his wages, the widow and the orphan, and those who turn aside the alien and do not fear Me,” says the LORD of hosts.
He calls upon us to ask, seek and knock, to come to Him, and as we do we find the Him as the Man with a drawn sword, separating inwardly the wheat from the chaff, the true from the false. This is the destruction of our Adamic nature, the antichrist spirit, that we are born under, by our natural birth. Here this can be seen as; “against the sorcerers and against the adulterers and against those who swear falsely”
6 “For I, the LORD, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.
7 “From the days of your fathers you have turned aside from My statutes and have not kept them. Return to Me, and I will return to you,” says the LORD of hosts. “But you say, ‘How shall we return?’
The Lord is addressing our false identity as He refers to our fathers, the core of this must be seen as more than our natural fathers, it must be seen for exactly what is being expressed here. Our fathers are the evil spirits that have shaped our thinking, and influenced our lives; it’s the lawless spirit that resists the Lord. It’s the father of lies satan, that is the root of what is addressed here. The Lord is laying this out before us, and is beckoning us to return to Him, and flee from the spirits that are in rebellion to Him.
8 “Will a man rob God? Yet you are robbing Me! But you say, ‘How have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings.
9 “You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing Me, the whole nation of you!
10 “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this,” says the LORD of hosts, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.
11 “Then I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that it will not destroy the fruits of the ground; nor will your vine in the field cast its grapes,” says the LORD of hosts.
12 “All the nations will call you blessed, for you shall be a delightful land,” says the LORD of hosts.
Here we see the spiritual intent of the tithe, and it goes much deeper than money or goods, it goes to the heart of the matter, our submission to Him as Lord. He is seeking for those who will bring their tithe to Him in Spirit and Truth. This is the intent of grace, we come to see that there is no good thing we have in our flesh, humility allows us to become like a child before the Lord. We in grace lay our lives before His throne of grace. It must be seen as our part of the bargain He offers, no longer robbing Him of our submission, but making our life a freewill offering. Our part can be seen as 10% of the equation, and the Lord is the remaining 90%. “for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.” Philippians 2:13
Grace is a gift from God that allows us to offer our tithe, our humble offering to the Lord, and when this is applied we see the Lords response. “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this,” says the LORD of hosts, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.” Here we are seeing the Treasure from heaven; it’s the very Nature and Sprit of the Lord coming to us, making His home within us, abiding and finding a place to rest His head. This is exactly what His Lordship is all about, separating us from the false head of our thinking, and replacing this with His head, mind, thinking, and reasoning. “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:”
13 “Your words have been arrogant against Me,” says the LORD. “Yet you say, ‘What have we spoken against You?’
14 “You have said, ‘It is vain to serve God; and what profit is it that we have kept His charge, and that we have walked in mourning before the LORD of hosts?
15 ‘So now we call the arrogant blessed; not only are the doers of wickedness built up but they also test God and escape.'”
The above verses are addressing the lawless spirit of this age, and the arrogance of those who may mouth the term Lord, yet do not submit to His Lordship. ““Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?”
“ ‘A son honors his father, and a servant his master. Then if I am a father, where is My honor? And if I am a master, where is My respect?’ says the LORD of hosts to you, O priests who despise My name. But you say, ‘How have we despised Your name?’ ~ Malachi 1:6
16 Then those who feared the LORD spoke to one another, and the LORD gave attention and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before Him for those who fear the LORD and who esteem His name.
17 “They will be Mine,” says the LORD of hosts, “on the day that I prepare My own possession, and I will spare them as a man spares his own son who serves him.”
18 So you will again distinguish between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve Him.
This is a day of great separation, the key here is what unlocks our Fathers heart, and it’s quite simple, humility. Humility is submission to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, only those that He can call His own, that reverence His rule in their lives, are the ones who esteem His name. This is the critical message of Malachi, and one of great importance for us to see in Spirit and Truth.
“For thus says the high and exalted One Who lives forever, whose name is Holy, “I dwell on a high and holy place, And also with the contrite and lowly of spirit In order to revive the spirit of the lowly And to revive the heart of the contrite.”
~ Isaiah 57:15
