A Place to Lay His Head

A Habitation

Today the Lord is seeking a place to rest His head, a place where He is welcomed, and can be Himself, where He is embraced and respected as truly our Lord. Scripture expresses this; His beckoning call “come to Me” is to enter His rest.

Additionally His statement The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” His search is for a people that allow Him to their Lord, and to experience the beauty of  an ever deepening relationship into Him.

The Lord is my strength and song, and He is become my salvation: He is my God, and I will prepare Him a habitation; my father’s God, and I will exalt Him.”
  ~ Exodus 15:2

Jacob sets an example for us, as he followed the lead of the Spirit he like the fathers before him sought the Lord, and found a place where he could begin to see the beauty of life.

Genesis 28

10 Then Jacob departed from Beersheba and went toward Haran.
11 He came to a certain place and spent the night there, because the sun had set; and he took one of the stones of the place and put it under his head, and lay down in that place.

Beersheba is seen as ‘well of oath’ a promise or it can be seen as something to walk in, just as Caleb walked in the promise land. Here we see Jacob leaving Beersheba and he went toward Haran.

Haran can bee seen as ‘burning’ “But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap.”~ Malachi 3:2
Jacob left the promise to walk in the fire, this is mystical language for us to see today, we hear His voice, and we allow the Lord to create within us a place of habitation. This is the work of His grace, purifying the sons of Levi.

The place that Jacob rested is exactly the same symbolic term for the threshing floor of Ornan, the separation of the wheat and chaff that allows us to see the Lord with refined understanding, and greater depth.
The verse “The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” is so revealing, for it is in this refinement that the Lord finds His hearts desire, an open heart or spirit that allows Him to be exactly what He desires, and what we each need, to rest upon Him, and to see Him as our Lord, our Head. This is the intent of the Sabbath, and entering His rest.

Jacob saw this in his experience at Haran, his testimony is one for us to learn from today, as it is recorded in Genesis 28.

12  He had a dream, and behold, a ladder was set on the earth with its top reaching to heaven; and behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.

13  And behold, the LORD stood above it and said, “I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie, I will give it to you and to your descendants.

The land on which you lie is symbolic language, his head was resting on the stone, and this refers to Christ. So in this passage we can see the connection of heaven and earth in the Lord.

14  “Your descendants will also be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and in you and in your descendants shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

15  “Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”

The promise we have in the Lord is the work He starts in us, He will complete, this is the intent of verse 15, “ for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”

16  Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it.”

17  He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”

From Jacob’s experience he was beginning to see the Lord as his God and God as his Lord.

18  So Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on its top.

19  He called the name of that place Bethel; however, previously the name of the city had been Luz.

Jacob named the place where He encountered the Lord, Bethel, house of God; Beth-El.
This is exactly what the Lord is creating today in His people; this is the body of Christ coming together under His headship. It is Zion in all of its meaning and beauty.

20  Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will keep me on this journey that I take, and will give me food to eat and garments to wear,

21  and I return to my father’s house in safety, then the LORD will be my God.

The author of Hebrews expresses the same intent.

“He again fixes a certain day, “Today,” saying through David after so long a time just as has been said before,

For if Joshua had given them rest, He would not have spoken of another day after that.

So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God.
For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His.
Therefore let us be diligent to enter that rest, so that no one will fall, through following the same example of disobedience.
For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”   ~ Heb 4:7~12

It cannot be overstated, our submission to the Lord is vital, and this is an ongoing position. The more we submit, the more we see, and the more we see, the more we submit.

This is the inner working of the cross, and the ever deepening work of the Holy Spirit, Christ coming forth in His body, and the Kingdom being established on earth as it is in heaven.
