The Rock and rocks

Drop the rock, and Live in The Rock

John 8: 1~11

But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives

. At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?”

They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.

But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.”

Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.

At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there.

Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”

 “No one, sir,” she said.

“Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

I see community in these passages, the ugly truth, our common guilt, and our common hope.

We are all guilty of adultery, we have and more often that we care to admit commit this sin. We have been bought; we are the bride of Christ. We have pledged our faithful devotion to the One who Loves, and is Love.

Gut check time, how have we lacked in our commitment, how often have we jumped into the bed of sin? Sin is our nature, the ways of this age, we all are born in sin. It is only in a rebirth, a birth from above that we can become set free from our nature.

How often have we been the accuser, how often have we been in the woman’s sandals? How often have we been on both sides of this equation, at the same time? The truth is the truth, we have felt the white hot guilt, heard the voices of condemnation, even from within, “you just don’t measure up, look at yourself, who do you think you are?”

As she stood before Jesus, she knew her guilt. She knew without a doubt her fallen condition, she knew what was next. This was a common event, she has seen, or she had heard the talk around town. She was caught red handed. This was her future and she knew it, all according to the literal understanding of scripture. The letter of the law kills, but…

Imagine the fear, and then imagine Jesus’ words, followed by the sounds of rocks dropping. Rocks dropped not thrown. Then she stood before this man, and this was uncomfortable, His behavior had to increase her fear. He was just scratching something in the dust, not making eye contact. The moments had to seem like hours, and then He spoke.

“Woman, where are they?”  Her self-righteous judges had sulked away, and then she hears words spoken with authority, and grace. Her first experience with grace and truth had to have been life changing!

“Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

May we see the rocks in our hands, and drop them. May we see our grace, and go and do likewise to others. May we see our ability, our proclivity to be both judge and sinner, and may we, “Go and leave your life of sin”.

What a Savior, unequaled then, and today, and for eternity, in  Jesus the Christ!

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.”
John 3:16~22

His command to “go and sin no more” was for her,and us to see the Light, and to submit ourselves to The Light. For it is only in Him that knew no sin that we can become a new creation. This is His calling, His Way into all Truth, and Life. We are to awaken to what Paul stated;

For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring. Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device. And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.” Acts 17:28~31
